Teacher-coaches are the backbone of any successful education program. On it's face, the Bay Area Urban Debate League appears to be a student serving organization, but the reality is BAUDL is a teacher serving organization. We could not sustain a dozen or more debate programs without the work of driven, passionate teachers. They are the people who directly serve youth. Our job at BAUDL is to give teacher-coaches the tools and support to educate and inspire young minds to the highest levels of academic success.
Coach Professional Development
Many BAUDL teachers begin to work with our program without knowledge of debate as a tool to educate. Debate is a practice, an art. Formal, competitive debate is a specialized art which requires training to master. BAUDL offers a wide array of curriculum created by teachers for teachers. Our activities are designed to teach debate fundamentals in an exciting way and can be easily modified to focus on specific topics or scaffolded to work with higher level students. BAUDL hosts professional development sessions over the school year to help teacher-coaches become familiar with debate language and strategy. Each five hour session focuses in on a part of debate process and theory.

The Coaches Debate Tournament
|As students prove, the best way to learn debate and love debate is to debate. BAUDL hosts an annual coaches tournament for all coaches in our league. The tournament is judged by college debaters and college debate coaches with years of experience in highly competitive debate rounds. The Coaches Tournament program was started with the support of a brilliant philanthropist who was a successful speech & debate coach. Our coaches should love and experience debate the same way a young person on their team does. As a result, when a youth is struggling to learn a concept or has those fear of public speaking jitters, a BAUDL coach can look them in the eyes and say, "I understand what you are going through and I promise it's worth it." |
